“To learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled out is a spark”

 – Victor Hugo

Samarthanam has promoted its Jnanavikas Library programme for over a decade, aiming to enhance the learning experience of economically challenged and physically disadvantaged children studying in government schools in Karnataka.

The programme initially funded by Child Vikas International, now partners with Hippocampus to run libraries in 6 schools:

Government Model Public school, Hulimavu

Government Model Public School, Madiwala

Government Model Public School, Jakkasandra

YAS Primary School, Subramanyapura

Government Model Public School, Sarakki and

Government Model Public School, Hosakerehalli

With over 8000 books in Kannada and English, the libraries hope to improve the reading ability of the children, enhance their language and communication skills and instil the glorious habit of reading.

Books are classified into 6 levels based on pictures and content and children are graded on their reading skills. With puzzles, art and other weekly activities, guided by the librarians, students are provided a rich and varied reading experience.

This initiative benefits as many as 3000 children across the six government schools.
