Well-being Out of Waste (WOW)” is a recycling programme, initiated in 2007, by the Paperboards and Specialty Papers Business of ITC. It is a corporate level program where the focus is on ensuring proper segregation and recycling of waste.
Recycling is one of the most important and viable ways to combat the challenges of resource depletion. Source Segregation of recyclables reduces the load on natural resources, provide cost effective raw material to industry, improve health and hygiene and provide clean and green surroundings. To ensure a clean and hygienic neighborhood and create sustainable livelihood for the participants involved in the waste management process, in association with Samarthanam, ITC executes various programmes with the help of BBMP.
Objective – •To promote waste management system that educates to reduce, reuse and recycle waste
into opportunities that alleviate poverty. •To bring in the behavior change among general community regarding waste segregation at source level.
•To increase the quantity of recycling of waste by avoiding the land fill.
•To create cleaner and greener environment through segregation of waste at source.
•To make the livelihood better for Rag pickers.
•Collaborating with local governments and communities to build integrated systems and Swachh Bharat Mission.

Scope – •Creating awareness to the community level by Individual, mass/ public / educational forms and handovers the informative brochure, which self-explanatory about the types of waste to handle at source. Followed with the regular interaction with the waste handlers / Pourakarmikas and sensitizing them about the effective management of health, waste materials during waste handling etc. Which helps the livelihood waste handlers / Poura Karmikas and their family members.
•Also ensures to keep the ward clean and remove the black spot by engaging volunteers and with the help of rag pickers, community leaders.
•The entire process of the project helps to keep the air clean and prevents many air borne diseases by spreading.

Presently, Bengaluru City is facing significant problems due to existing disposal practices of generated waste, incurring high cost due to lack of proper infrastructural facilities; also, the open dumping in the expanding zone of the city poses severe problems to the structures constructed on these old dumps. Bangalore city generates around 4500MT/day of municipal solid waste (MSW) at an average of 0.5 kg/day/per capita, with about 8.4 million people. Less than 60% of waste is collected; approximately 15% of waste is processed finally dumped into landfills. While recycling has not reached its full potential in Bangalore. |

Food waste converter, installed at Samarthanam, converts 70-100 kgs of food waste generated in one day at Samarthanam into organic manure.
Solar panels installed at Samarthanam support the electrical energy requirements of the organization.
STP built in at Samarthanam treats waste water by eliminating the harmful contaminants in the most ecological manner. The plant treated 66500 liters of water till date.
A wide variety of indoor and ornamental plants are grown at Samarthanam’s nursery planted in cement pots, for in-house purchasing and corporate gifting.
